Welcome to Colonia Libertad es la presentación en comunidad de Lady Libertad: pieza de obra pública que pretende crear una dinámica de análisis, práctica y apreciación de la colonia Libertad y sus características específicas. La pieza nace de un bosquejo de 1882 del pedestal que soportaría la estatua de la libertad. Este bosquejo unía una pirámide precolombina y la estatua de la libertad. El pedestal nunca se construyó. Hasta ahora!
Jose Castillo is a practicing architect and urbanist living and working in Mexico City. He is the principal and founder alongside Saidee Springall of arquitectura 911sc, an independent architectural and urban practice. Among their built works are the SA236 housing complex and the JS32 offices in Mexico City and the competition-winning projects for the expansion of the Spanish Cultural Center in the Historic Center of Mexico City (with Javier Sanchez), and the new campus for the CEDIM school of architecture and design in Monterrey (with Fernanda Canales). Their urban planning work, includes various transportation corridors in the metropolitan area of Mexico City and developing along Arup and JSa a 50 hectare master plan for the former railyards of Pantaco, Mexico City. Recently, arquitectura 911sc was awarded the first prize in the public competition for a new Performing Arts Center in Guadalajara, Mexico. Construction for the 20,000 sq. meters, 3 theater complex is expected to start in mid 2010.
Castillo’s work and writings have appeared in several publications including Praxis Journal, Bomb, Arquine, Architectural Record, 2G, and Domus as well as in the Book The Endless City, published by Phaidon. He is a professor at the Universidad Iberoamericana’s School of Architecture in Mexico City and at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design where he teaches a seminar titled The Spaces of Tourism. Castillo is also part of Urban Age, a series of global conferences on the future of cities directed by Ricky Burdett and funded by the London School of Economics and the Deutsche Bank.
Since 2005, Castillo has curated various exhibitions including Mexico City Dialogues: New Architectural Practices at the Center for Architecture in New York City and participations at the Rotterdam, Venice, Sao Paulo and Canary Island Biennales.
David Fletcher, founding Principal at Fletcher Studio, is an Urban Designer and Landscape Architect, professor, and writer. His work addresses process, void, symbiosis, alternative transportation networks, green infrastructure, and post-industrial urbanism.He is interested in the intersections of city, landscape, and art. He holds an MLA with Distinction from Harvard University (2004), and a BFA in Studio Art and BA in Landscape Architecture from the University of California at Davis (1993). He has in professional practice since 1994. In addition to having his own design/build practice, he has worked for Jay Griffith on furniture design and landscape projects; Pamela Burton & Associates on major campus plans, residential and commercial design projects and Mia Lehrer & Associates on large-scale planning projects for municipal and public outdoor spaces. His graduate work has been honored by the American Society for Landscape Architecture with a 1st place national award for his work with postindustrial landscapes. He also receives an Honor Award in 2004 from the ASLA. He has taught Advanced Representation at the GSD, design studios at the Centre d’Etude et d’Urbanisme in Saintes, France, and at the University of Southern California School of Architecture. His temporary installations have been shown at Connemara Sculpture Park, (1994, Plano, Texas), and Harvard Design School “Barcelona: Public” and “Bound” (2002 and 2003), “Found,” and the UC Davis (California) campus.
